‘Mascaruba’ building * 1934
Category: Oranjestad
This building dates back to 1934. It was a school and association building, called ‘Sint Franciscus Club’, just like the church across the street. It was a roman catholic nursery school and youth society. It was part of a complex of buildings, including a church, a parsonage, a convent, a friars house and several school buildings.
From the beginning, their was a theater hall on the top floor. It was much later that the Fundacion Teatro Arubano Mascaruba started theater performances there. On the ground floor, there were three or four class rooms. Several types of schools occupied these rooms at some time, like the ‘Huishoudschool’ (Domestic Science School) and the HBS High School.
Initially, there was an exterior wooden flight of stairs, connecting both galleries; later it was removed and replaced by an interior flight of stairs.
This building owes its name to the many theater performances held here in the years before the opening of Cas di Cultura by the theater group Mascaruba.
